Campbeltown, at the tip of the Kintyre peninsula, was once a whisky capital. Today, however, only a handful of distilleries remain, including Springbank and Glen Scotia, which are highly regarded by enthusiasts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Most tours follow the main stages of production: malting the barley, brewing, fermentation, distillation in copper stills, and then aging in barrels. They then end with a tasting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Whisky Route in Scotland: the rule to know while driving<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This is the most important point in your planning. Since 2014, Scotland has had a blood alcohol limit of 50 mg per 100 ml of blood, lower than in the rest of the UK. In practice, just one drink can be enough to exceed this limit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you are travelling by car, therefore designate a driver who does not drink. Some distilleries even allow you to take home a sample to taste later. The best route depends mainly on the time you have available and the style of whisky you prefer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A 4 to 5 day getaway<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

With more time, consider combining the major regions. A classic route, for example, links Edinburgh, Stirling, and Loch Lomond, then crosses the sea to Islay. From May to September, the days are long and most visitor centers operate with their extended hours. However, this is also the busiest period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
