Midhope Castle, aka Lallybroch<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

This 15th-century tower house represents Lallybroch, the estate of Jamie's family. It is located on the Hopetoun estate, west of Edinburgh. However, check access conditions before visiting, as the site is private.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Located nearby, this sumptuous residence notably served as the setting for several aristocratic interiors in the series. Its gardens and views of the Firth of Forth are also worth a visit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Blackness Castle, aka Fort William<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

On the shores of the Firth of Forth, Blackness Castle represents the garrison of Fort William, where Captain Randall holds sway. Its shape is reminiscent of the prow of a ship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Linlithgow Palace, aka Wentworth Prison<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The ruins of this royal palace, where Mary Stuart was born, served as the setting for Wentworth Prison. They are located about thirty minutes from Edinburgh by train.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

South of the capital, Craigmillar Castle notably served as a filming location for scenes in the third season. In the Old Town, Bakehouse Close, near the Royal Mile, was used as Jamie's printing shop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Falkland, aka Inverness<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

In the heart of Fife, the village of Falkland played the role of Inverness in the 1940s, at the very beginning of the series. Its royal palace can also be visited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Doune Castle, aka Castle Leoch<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Near Stirling, Doune Castle represents Castle Leoch, the castle of the MacKenzie clan. Incidentally, film buffs will also recognize sets from Monty Python and the Holy Grail!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Highland landscapes finally appear throughout the series. The Rannoch region and the Glencoe valley, in particular, provided their panoramas for the opening credits and outdoor scenes. Glencoe also served as a backdrop for Harry Potter in Scotland<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Near Inverness, the Culloden battlefield then recounts the Jacobite defeat of 1746, which lies at the heart of the plot.
