Of course, the days are short and the weather changes quickly. Having lived in Edinburgh since 2012, we're sharing our tips for making the most of this season, from November to March.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why go to Scotland in winter?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

First, winter is the quietest season. Major attractions, such as Edinburgh Castle or the Glencoe Valley, can be visited without the summer crowds. Accommodation is also more readily available and often cheaper outside of the holiday season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then, the landscapes change completely. It's also the season for Christmas markets in Scotland<\/a>, From Edinburgh to Aberdeen. Snow blankets the Munros, those peaks over 3,000 feet high, while the low light gilds the lochs all day long. Finally, it's the season of the great Scottish festivals, from Christmas to Burns Night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The climate in Scotland in winter<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The cold generally remains moderate along the coasts, thanks to the influence of the ocean. In Edinburgh, temperatures often range between 0 and 7\u00b0C. In the Highlands, however, it freezes more frequently, and snow falls regularly at higher elevations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What to do in Scotland in winter?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Experiencing Christmas and Hogmanay in Edinburgh<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

From mid-November to early January, the capital lights up. The Christmas market sets up at the foot of the castle, then Hogmanay, the Scottish New Year, attracts visitors from all over the world. Celebrate Burns Night and Up Helly Aa<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Scotland has five ski resorts: Cairngorm Mountain, Glenshee, The Lecht, Nevis Range, and Glencoe Mountain. Snow conditions vary considerably from year to year, so it's important to be flexible and check the conditions the day before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Watching for the Northern Lights<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Warming up in a distillery<\/h3>\n\n\n\n
