Kew Gardens, England’s most famous botanical garden

It’s impossible to mention the most beautiful gardens in England without starting with Kew Gardens, which is in London.

Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this botanical garden is home to more than 50,000 plant species from all over the world.

Among the must-sees are:

  • Palm House; ;
  • Temperate House; ;
  • Treetop Walkway; ;
  • Princess of Wales Conservatory; ;
  • Japanese Landscape.

In spring, the blooms are particularly spectacular. However, every season has its own charm, thanks to the many tropical greenhouses.

Kew Gardens is well worth spending a whole day exploring.

Sissinghurst Castle Garden, Kent’s romantic garden

Created in the 1930s by the writer Vita Sackville-West, Sissinghurst Castle Garden is now regarded as one of the finest English gardens.

Its design is based on several «planted areas» separated by hedges.

Among the most famous venues are:

  • the White Garden; ;
  • the Rose Garden; ;
  • the Cottage Garden; ;
  • The Orchard.

Each space has its own identity, whilst maintaining perfect harmony.

Spring and early summer are particularly good times to visit.

Hidcote Manor Garden, the jewel of the Cotswolds

Situated in the Cotswolds, Hidcote Manor Garden is one of the most influential gardens of the 20th century.

Created by Lawrence Johnston, it has had a profound impact on the history of the English garden.

The estate consists of a series of themed gardens linked by flower-lined paths.

In particular, you’ll be able to discover:

  • the Red Border; ;
  • the White Garden; ;
  • the Fuchsia Garden; ;
  • the long-term prospects.

Thanks to the way it’s organised, every detour reveals a new landscape.

Stourhead, the masterpiece of English landscape gardening

Stourhead is one of the finest examples of an 18th-century English landscape garden.

Unlike highly structured gardens, this one recreates idealised natural landscapes.

The walk around the lake offers views of:

  • the Temple of Apollo; ;
  • the Pantheon; ;
  • the caves; ;
  • stone bridges; ;
  • the long-term prospects.

In autumn, the colours of the trees make a visit here particularly spectacular.

Bodnant Garden, a garden nestled amongst mountains and flowers

Situated in North Wales, near the English border, Bodnant Garden attracts visitors with its vast plant collections.

The garden is particularly famous for:

  • its Laburnum Arch; ;
  • its Italian terraces; ;
  • its water gardens; ;
  • her rhododendrons; ;
  • its magnolias.

In spring, the blossoms put on a spectacular display.

Great Dixter House & Gardens

Great Dixter is one of the most creative gardens in England.

Designed by Christopher Lloyd, it combines colours, shapes and very bold planting schemes.

Unlike more traditional gardens, Great Dixter favours a natural approach whilst remaining perfectly controlled.

Every visit is different depending on the season.

Wisley Garden, the Royal Horticultural Society’s garden

The RHS Garden Wisley is a world-leading centre for horticulture.

Its collections offer visitors the chance to see thousands of different plant varieties.

In particular, you’ll be able to visit:

  • experimental gardens; ;
  • modern greenhouses; ;
  • the rose gardens; ;
  • alpine gardens; ;
  • water gardens.

Gardening enthusiasts will also find plenty of ideas there for their own gardens.

Chatsworth House Gardens

The gardens at Chatsworth House complement one of England’s finest stately homes.

The estate comprises:

  • large fountains; ;
  • the Cascade Garden; ;
  • the Maze; ;
  • contemporary sculptures; ;
  • several kilometres of walks.

The complex covers more than 100 hectares.

The estate is also famous for having been used as a film location for several films.

Levens Hall and its topiaries

Levens Hall boasts the oldest topiary gardens still in use in the world.

More than a hundred shrubs have been pruned into shapes over the course of several centuries.

The result is spectacular.

The geometric shapes stand in contrast to the flowerbeds and the more natural gardens surrounding the estate.

The Lost Gardens of Heligan

Situated in Cornwall, the Lost Gardens of Heligan were rediscovered in the 1990s after several decades of neglect.

Today, they are among the most visited gardens in the south-west of England.

You'll discover :

  • a subtropical jungle; ;
  • vegetable gardens; ;
  • the famous plant sculptures; ;
  • forest paths.

The site has a particularly unique atmosphere.

Wakehurst Royal Botanic Gardens

Wakehurst is often regarded as Kew Gardens’ little brother.

The estate is home to, amongst other things, the Millennium Seed Bank, the world’s largest wild seed bank.

Its landscapes combine forests, ornamental gardens, flower-filled meadows and botanical collections.

Each season completely transforms the park.

The gardens of Blenheim Palace

Around Blenheim Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, there are several remarkable gardens well worth a visit.

In particular, you’ll be able to discover:

  • the Water Terrace; ;
  • The Secret Garden; ;
  • the Rose Garden; ;
  • the landscaped park designed by Capability Brown.

The views of the palace are particularly elegant.

When is the best time to visit the English gardens?

Every season has its own appeal.

Spring is the perfect time to admire tulips, magnolias, wisteria and cherry blossoms.

Summer brings the most beautiful blooms of roses, lavender and perennials.

Autumn transforms the large parks with the trees’ flamboyant colours.

Finally, some gardens remain open in winter and feature collections of camellias or snowdrops.

How long should I allow for this?

Half a day is enough for small gardens.

On the other hand, Kew Gardens, Chatsworth and Stourhead usually take a full day to visit.

If you’d like to visit several gardens during the same trip, you should allow at least five to seven days.

This means you can combine them with a visit to London, the Cotswolds, Bath, Oxford or even Kent.

Tips for visiting England’s most beautiful gardens

It is therefore recommended that you:

  • wear comfortable shoes; ;
