What is a traditional Irish music session?

A session brings musicians together around a pub table. No one is really in charge: someone starts a tune, the others follow, then play other songs. So there's no stage, no tickets, and no fixed schedule.

The atmosphere remains friendly, but a few rules exist. You listen during the songs, you applaud at the end, and you avoid sitting at the musicians' table unless invited.

The instruments of traditional Irish music

• The violin, called a fiddle, which often carries the melody.
• The wooden transverse flute and the tin whistle, a small metal whistle.
• The uilleann pipes, the Irish bagpipe, played sitting down and blown with the elbow.
• The bodhrán, a hand-held drum, provides the rhythm.
• The accordion, concertina, banjo and guitar accompany the ensemble.

Where can I listen to traditional Irish music?

Dublin

The capital offers sessions every night. Temple Bar mainly attracts visitors, with a festive but very touristy atmosphere. Galway

Galway is considered the cultural capital of the west. The pubs in the Latin Quarter offer sessions almost every night, often starting in the late afternoon. The city is also renowned for its festivals.

County Clare and Doolin

When is the best time to go for traditional Irish music?

The sessions take place all year round, including in winter. However, summer is when the major events are concentrated, such as Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann, the country's largest traditional music festival, or the Willie Clancy Summer School, in Miltown Malbay in July.

• Arrive early, around 8pm, because the best seats go quickly.
• Ask at the pub what time the session starts: it is rarely announced in advance.
• Opt for local pubs rather than the most touristy spots.
• Provide cash for the musicians when a hat is being passed around.
• Finally, avoid filming for long periods: the session is not a show.
