Why choose a holiday at the Púca Festival in Ireland?

Le Púca Festival, Ireland takes you back to the true origins of Halloween. Over four days, you’ll explore County Meath and the Boyne Valley. You’ll also discover the ancient traditions of Samhain.

First, the journey takes you to megalithic sites dating back more than 5,000 years. Next, you’ll visit sacred hills and medieval towns. Finally, the performances at the Púca Festival bring Celtic myths and legends to life.

This holiday therefore combines heritage, Irish landscapes and autumnal festivities. It offers a more authentic experience than a simple city break in Dublin.

Púca Festival, Ireland: the origins of Samhain

Samhain once marked the end of the harvest and the beginning of the dark season. According to ancient Celtic beliefs, the boundary between the living and the spirits became more fragile at that time.

Today, the Púca Festival celebrates this heritage in County Meath. Trim and Athboy, in particular, host shows, concerts and art installations. What’s more, storytellers and fantastical creatures bring Irish legends to life.

The programme changes every year. However, the festival still maintains a strong link with the history of Samhain.

The Boyne Valley and its ancient monuments

The Boyne Valley is home to some of Europe’s oldest prehistoric monuments. The Brú na Bóinne site is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Newgrange is one of its most impressive monuments. Its builders designed its passageway so that the light of the winter solstice would reach the inner chamber.

Next, Knowth reveals a remarkable collection of engraved stones. Spirals, circles and geometric shapes adorn several monuments. Finally, Dowth offers a more peaceful experience, in a setting steeped in myth.

Trim, Kells and the key sites of Celtic legends

The journey continues to Trim. This medieval town is home to the largest Anglo-Norman castle in Ireland. Trim Castle has overlooked the River Boyne for over eight centuries.

Furthermore, Kells boasts a rich monastic heritage. Among other things, you can see Celtic crosses and an ancient round tower there. The town also remains closely linked to the famous Book of Kells.

Finally, Hill of Ward, also known as Tlachtga, plays a central role in Samhain traditions. According to legend, the druids would light the great sacred fire there to mark the beginning of the Celtic New Year.

The Hill of Tara and the Loughcrew Cairns

Loughcrew Cairns comprises several megalithic tombs on the hilltops of County Meath. A short walk takes you to the monuments. From the hilltops, the view stretches out over the surrounding countryside.

Next, the Hill of Tara takes you in the footsteps of the High Kings of Ireland. This sacred site was once the venue for important ceremonies and gatherings. Here, history and mythology come together within the same landscape.
