What is the Edinburgh Festival Fringe?

The Edinburgh Festival Fringe is a huge festival dedicated to the performing arts.

For three weeks in August, artists from all over the world perform throughout the capital. The program includes theatre, comedy, music, dance, circus, cabaret, musicals and children's shows.

However, the Fringe's most distinctive feature lies in its operation.

This is a festival open access. Therefore, there is no central committee responsible for selecting all the artists. This freedom allows both established artists and new talents to present their creations.

Thus, each edition holds its share of discoveries and surprises.

A story that begins in 1947

The history of the Fringe begins in 1947.

That year, eight theatre companies arrived in Edinburgh to perform during the Edinburgh International Festival. However, they were not part of the official program.

Rather than giving up, these artists decided to present their shows on the sidelines of the festival. This is how the concept of the "Fringe" gradually emerged.

Other artists then followed their example.

In response to the growing success of this movement, the Festival Fringe Society was created in 1958. Its objective was, in particular, to support artists and help the public discover the various shows.

Today, the Fringe has become one of Scotland's most iconic cultural events.

Edinburgh transformed into a giant stage

How to choose your shows?

With several thousand shows available, choosing can seem complicated.

Start by selecting the genres that interest you. Then, filter the shows according to your travel dates and times.

The official program allows you to perform these searches. Furthermore, the official EdFringe app lets you search for shows and create a favorites list. It also allows you to buy tickets directly from your phone.

However, do not complete your program completely.

Leave some free time to check out recommended shows on site. It's all part of the Fringe experience.

Do you need to book shows in advance?

It depends on the show.

For well-known artists and highly requested performances, it is best to book in advance.

However, many shows remain available during the festival. Some also offer special packages. Pay What You Want or Pay What You Can.

In 2026, 691 shows operate according to one of these models.

In addition, the Half Price Hut offers half-price tickets for selected participating performances. This service will launch on August 12, 2026.

Thus, it is perfectly possible to decide on part of your program once you arrive in Edinburgh.

Where does the Fringe take place in Edinburgh?

The Fringe takes place throughout the city.

However, the historic center concentrates much of the activity.

The Royal Mile and the Old Town are therefore excellent starting points. You can then reach the various performance venues on foot or by public transport.

However, be mindful of the distances.

Edinburgh remains a relatively compact city. However, it becomes extremely crowded during August. The official organizers therefore recommend allowing ample time between shows.

Take advantage of the Fringe to visit Edinburgh

A stay during the Fringe does not necessarily have to be devoted solely to shows.

In the morning, take advantage of a quieter period to visit the capital.

Start with Edinburgh Castle and the Royal Mile. Then, explore Victoria Street, Grassmarket, and Princes Street Gardens.

You can also reach Dean Village and Stockbridge. For a more nature-focused experience, head up to Arthur's Seat or Calton Hill.

Then, in the late afternoon, experience the Fringe atmosphere again and attend your first shows.

August is one of the most popular times of the year in Edinburgh.

It is therefore strongly recommended to book your accommodation in advance. The closer your stay gets, the more limited your choices may become.

In addition, the streets and transport are particularly busy during the Fringe.
