The best part of a road trip?

Ladies View and Moll's Gap

South of Killarney, the road climbs towards Ladies View, a viewpoint overlooking the lakes named after a visit by Queen Victoria's ladies-in-waiting. Further on, the Moll's Gap pass offers a panorama of the MacGillycuddy's Reeks mountains, the highest in Ireland.

Kenmare and Sneem

Kenmare is a pretty little town with colorful facades, ideal for a lunch break. Further on, the village of Sneem, bisected by a river, charms with its pastel houses.

Derrynane and Caherdaniel

Here, the coastline becomes spectacular. Derrynane Park combines white sand beaches with the house of Daniel O'Connell, a figure in Irish history. On a clear day, the turquoise water never fails to impress visitors.

Waterville and the Skellig Ring

In Waterville, a statue pays tribute to Charlie Chaplin, who spent his holidays there. Also, don't miss a detour via the Skellig Ring, a small road leading to Portmagee, Valentia Island, and the Kerry Cliffs, opposite the Skellig Islands.

Cahersiveen, Glenbeigh and Rossbeigh

On the north coast, Cahersiveen retains circular stone forts. Finally, the long beach at Rossbeigh, near Glenbeigh, offers a last break before the return to Killarney.

Which direction should I choose for the Ring of Kerry?

Tour coaches travel counter-clockwise from Killarney towards Killorglin. Many drivers therefore follow the same direction to avoid clashing coaches on narrow sections of road. To avoid the crowds, however, leave early in the morning, before the excursions depart.

Driving is on the left, on roads that are sometimes winding. Read our tips for rent a car in Ireland before leaving.

Skellig Michael: the excursion apart

Off the coast of Portmagee, Skellig Michael Island is home to a medieval monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage Site made famous by Star Wars. Landings are very limited and only operate during the summer months, generally from mid-May to September, weather permitting. Therefore, book your boat several months in advance.
