◷ 5-minute read

The Dingle Peninsula It's one of the wildest and most authentic corners of Ireland. With its vertiginous cliffs, vast beaches, monastic sites, and pubs where Irish is still spoken, it offers a concentrated dose of Western Ireland. Here's the route to follow, the must-see stops, and our local agency's tips.

In short: The Dingle Peninsula is located in County Kerry, north of the Ring of Kerry, about an hour from Killarney. The highlight is the Slea Head Drive, a coastal loop of approximately 47 kilometers starting from the small town of Dingle. Also worth seeing are the Gallarus Oratory, the Blasket Islands, Inch Beach, and Conor Pass. Allow at least one day, ideally two, with an overnight stay in Dingle.

Dingle, the gateway to the peninsula

First, the small fishing port of Dingle, or An Daingean in Irish, with its colorful facades, is the ideal base for exploring the peninsula. The region is part of the Gaeltacht, where Irish remains an everyday language: you'll see this on the signs.

The perfect end to the day?

  • Stroll along the harbor and the shopping streets of Main Street and Green Street.
  • Try some artisanal ice cream at Murphy's, a local institution.
  • Visit the Dingle Distillery, which produces whiskey, gin and vodka.
  • Have a drink at Dick Mack's, a former leather shop turned pub, or at Foxy John's, which is both a hardware store and a bar.

In the evenings, the city's pubs also host traditional music sessions almost every day. Discover our recommendations in our guide to the traditional Irish music.

The Slea Head Drive, step by step

Next, this loop of approximately 47 kilometers starts west from Dingle and follows the tip of the peninsula. It is generally traveled clockwise, as indicated by the signs, due to very narrow roads.

  • Dunbeg Fort : a stone fort perched on a cliff, facing the ocean.
  • The dry stone huts : these beehive-shaped «clocháns» are reminiscent of the first Christian monks.
  • Slea Head : the prime viewpoint overlooking the Blasket Islands and the Atlantic.
  • Coumeenoole Beach : a spectacular little cove, framed by cliffs.
  • Dunquin : its small, winding port serves as a starting point for trips to the Blasket Islands.
  • The Oratory of Gallarus : a dry stone chapel about a thousand years old, which has remained watertight without mortar.

In total, allow approximately 3 to 4 hours including stops. For other coastal landscapes, also explore the Ireland's most beautiful cliffs.

The Blasket Islands

Furthermore, these islands were inhabited until 1953 by a small Irish-speaking community, which left behind a rich literary tradition. The Blasket Centre in Dunquin recounts their history. During the tourist season, boats travel to Great Blasket from Dunquin or Dingle, depending on the weather.

Conor Pass and Inch Beach

Conor Pass is also one of the highest mountain passes in Ireland. The views of the lakes and the two bays are superb; however, the road is very narrow and not recommended for motorhomes. In contrast, to the south of the peninsula, Inch Beach stretches for several kilometers of golden sand, perfect for a walk or a surfing lesson.

Dingle and the cinema

Furthermore, the peninsula's landscapes have served as backdrops for numerous films, from Ryan's Daughter to Star Wars: The Last Jedi, partly filmed near Ceann Sibéal. The Skellig Islands, another setting for the saga, are located off the coast of Ring of Kerry.
