The historic palaces

The Ritz remains the most iconic address, with its Palm Court and a strict dress code, jacket and tie required for men, as indicated by the Ritz website. Claridge's and The Savoy also offer a very classic service, in Art Deco rooms.

These places are booked several weeks, or even months, in advance for the weekend. Expect to pay a high price per person, often over £70.

Department stores

Fortnum & Mason, the historic tea supplier, serves its afternoon tea in a dedicated tea room. Harrods and Liberty also offer renowned versions. These are ideal if you're combining shopping with a delicious break.

The original afternoon teas

Some establishments offer themed versions: fashion-inspired pastries, service in a double-decker bus that travels through the city, or even vegan afternoon tea. These are often more affordable and very popular with families.

• Book as soon as your dates are set, especially for luxury hotels and weekends.
• Check the dress code: several venues do not allow sneakers, shorts and ripped jeans.
• Plan a light lunch, as the portions are generous and refills are provided.
• Mention your allergies or dietary requirements when booking: gluten-free and vegetarian versions are available almost everywhere.
