Celebrating the New Year during’Hogmanay in Edinburgh It's a unique experience. From December 29, 2026, to January 1, 2027, the Scottish capital will host a series of events including torchlight processions, concerts, a large street festival, and a fireworks display at the foot of the castle. Having lived in Edinburgh since 2012, we'll explain the program, the traditions, and offer some practical advice.

What is Hogmanay?

Hogmanay is the Scottish New Year. For centuries, it was a more important celebration than Christmas, which only became a public holiday in Scotland in 1958. Even today, January 2nd is a Scottish public holiday, extending the festivities.

Hogmanay's program in Edinburgh in 2026

The official festival lasts four days. Here are the major events announced for the Edinburgh's Hogmanay official website.

December 29: the torchlight procession

The Torchlight Procession kicks off the festivities at 6:30 p.m. Thousands of torchbearers will parade through the Old Town, creating a veritable river of fire. You can watch it for free from the route, or purchase a torch to join the procession.

December 30th: the Night Afore party

On New Year's Eve, a big concert heats up the atmosphere in Princes Street Gardens. It's also a great opportunity to enjoy the festivities with fewer crowds than on the 31st.

December 31st: The Street Party and the fireworks

On New Year's Eve, the city center transforms into a huge street party starting at 8 p.m. The program includes live music, DJs, street performances, and bagpipe players. At midnight, fireworks finally light up Edinburgh Castle.

Meanwhile, a concert is being held in the Princes Street gardens, just below the castle. Both events require tickets: the festival area is closed to the public without one.

January 1st: First Footin'’

On New Year's Day, a free, ticket-free musical trail invites you to discover concerts in various locations throughout the city. It's a gentle way to start the year.

Hogmanay traditions you should know

• The first-footing: the first person to cross the threshold after midnight brings good luck for the year. They traditionally arrive with a small gift, such as coal, shortbread, or whisky.
• Auld Lang Syne: at midnight, we sing this poem by Robert Burns while holding hands, arms crossed.
• End-of-year cleaning: traditionally, the house is cleaned before midnight, to start the year on a clean slate.
• Stonehaven fireballs: on the northeast coast, residents twirl flaming balls in the streets at midnight.

Our tips for a successful Hogmanay in Edinburgh

Book well in advance, as Street Party tickets and city centre accommodation sell out quickly. Ideally, choose accommodation within walking distance: on the evening of the 31st, traffic is very restricted in the city centre.

Regarding the weather, pack warm and waterproof clothing, as you'll be outside for several hours. Temperatures are often between 1 and 7°C, with wind. Also, consult our guide to... climate in Scotland before packing your suitcase.

Finally, keep in mind that many restaurants and attractions close on January 1st and 2nd. So book your tables in advance.

What to do in Edinburgh around Hogmanay?

Ideally, arrive a few days before Christmas Eve. This way you'll be able to enjoy the Edinburgh Christmas Market, open until January 3rd, and city illuminations.
