Here is our guide to find out when to go to Scotland depending on your itinerary and preferences.
What is the best time to visit Scotland?
For a first trip, we generally prefer the period between May and September.
The days are long, the landscapes are green, and the majority of tourist attractions are fully operational.
May and June are particularly interesting for a road trip. The days are long and the crowds are generally more manageable than in the height of summer.
September This is also a very good time to visit. The number of visitors starts to decrease after the summer holidays, and the landscapes remain perfectly suited for outdoor excursions.
Each season, however, has its own advantages. To complete your preparation, you can consult the official recommendations of VisitScotland on the best times to visit Scotland.
Going to Scotland in the spring: March, April and May
Spring gradually marks the return of long days and vegetation.
March
March remains a period of transition.
Temperatures are still cool and snow may sometimes remain on the higher ground of the Highlands.
On the other hand, the days are starting to get longer and visitor numbers remain low.
March can be a good time to visit Edinburgh or Glasgow and start exploring the Highlands. However, for a first big road trip, we would recommend April or May.
April
April becomes particularly interesting.
The days are noticeably longer and tourist sites are starting to resume their seasonal schedules.
The weather remains variable, but this period often offers a good compromise between tranquility and the length of the days.
April also allows you to discover the landscapes before the arrival of the high tourist season.
May
May is probably one of the best months to visit Scotland.
The days are long, the landscapes are very green and the number of visitors is generally lower than in July and August.
May is therefore a particularly interesting time to explore the Highlands, visit the Isle of Skye, discover Loch Ness or head to the west coast.
It is also an excellent choice for travellers who wish to enjoy the scenery while avoiding some of the summer crowds.
Going to Scotland in the summer: June, July and August
Summer is the peak tourist season.
The days are very long and the temperatures are generally the mildest of the year.
June
June is one of our favorite times if you're looking for when to go to Scotland to fully enjoy the scenery.
The days are almost reaching their maximum length.
This late light allows you to take your time on the roads of the Highlands, to organize longer hikes and to enjoy the landscapes until late in the evening.
In the north of the country and in the islands, the evenings are particularly bright around the summer solstice.
June is also an excellent time to discover the Hebrides, the Orkney Islands or to travel part of the North Coast 500.
July
July is one of the most popular months.
Temperatures are generally pleasant and the long days offer excellent conditions for outdoor activities.
It is also a good time for hiking, boat trips and island tours.
However, attendance is increasing sharply.
The Isle of Skye, Glencoe, Loch Ness, the Highlands and some rural accommodations can be in high demand.
It is therefore best to book well in advance.
August
August always offers very good conditions for travel.
It's also a particularly lively month in Edinburgh thanks to the many festivals, including the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo.
This exceptional event, however, leads to a high demand for accommodation in the capital.

Wind is also an excellent ally: midges are much less active when conditions are windy.
Traveling to Scotland in September
September is one of the best months to discover Scotland.
Attendance gradually decreases after the summer holidays.
The days are still long enough to organize nice excursions and most attractions are still open.

Going to Scotland in autumn: October and November
Autumn gradually transforms the Scottish landscape.
The forests take on red, orange and gold colours, particularly beautiful in certain areas of Perthshire and the Highlands.
October
October can offer some very beautiful landscapes.
The autumn colours are particularly pleasing around Pitlochry, Dunkeld or in the forests of the Highlands.
On the other hand, the days are getting noticeably shorter.
Rainfall is also becoming more frequent, and a more flexible schedule needs to be planned.
October remains a beautiful time for travellers seeking more tranquility.
November
November clearly marks the arrival of the low season.
The days are getting shorter and some tourist attractions are adopting reduced hours or closing temporarily.
The weather can also be more difficult, particularly in the Highlands.
Edinburgh, Glasgow or Inverness remain interesting options for an urban stay.
However, for a first big road trip, November is not the time we would choose.
Visiting Scotland in winter: December, January and February
Winter offers a completely different experience.
The peaks may be snow-capped, the landscapes take on a spectacular ambiance, and Scottish towns offer a particularly warm atmosphere.
Edinburgh is particularly lively during the Christmas and New Year period and Hogmanay.
However, the days are short.
Some roads in the Highlands may also be affected by snow or ice.
Winter is therefore more suited to an urban stay, a romantic getaway or a trip dedicated to winter landscapes than to a first big road trip.
