Why choose a trip to the Orkney Islands and Islay?

If there is one itinerary that can truly reveal the full diversity of Scotland, it is certainly a Trip to the Orkney Islands and Skye. In the space of ten days or so, you’ll travel from the bustling streets of Edinburgh to the wild landscapes of the Highlands, before on to two of the country’s most fascinating archipelagos. With a history stretching back a thousand years, scenic routes and unspoilt nature, every day holds its own share of discoveries.

From historic towns to whisky country

Your journey begins in Edinburgh, a capital city where history is evident on every street corner. Take the time to stroll along the Royal Mile, visit the castle that overlooks the city, or simply soak up the unique atmosphere of the Old Town.

As you leave the capital, the landscape gradually becomes wilder. The road passes through Perthshire before reaching the famous Speyside region, renowned worldwide for its distilleries. A visit offers the chance to discover the secrets of Scotch whisky production and gain a better understanding of the importance of this tradition in local culture.

The Orkney Islands: a journey through time

Continuing northwards, you’ll reach John O’Groats before setting sail for the Orkney Islands. As soon as you arrive, the atmosphere changes. Here, the wide open spaces, cliffs and prehistoric remains create a unique atmosphere.

Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the archipelago is home to some of Europe’s best-preserved Neolithic sites. Skara Brae, the Ring of Brodgar and the town of Kirkwall all tell a story stretching back thousands of years. It is a destination that delights history buffs and nature lovers alike.

The North Coast 500 and the Isle of Skye

After the Orkney Islands, you’ll follow part of the legendary North Coast 500. This route is one of the most beautiful in Europe. The mountains plunge into the sea, beaches appear as you round a bend, and the little villages seem frozen in time.

The journey then continues to the Isle of Skye, undoubtedly the most famous of the Scottish islands. Its spectacular landscapes, rugged terrain and fishing villages give it a unique character. Portree, the Cuillin mountains and Eilean Donan Castle are among the must-see stops on this itinerary.

Authentic Scotland

Before reaching Glasgow, you’ll pass through Glenfinnan and then the Glencoe Valley. These landscapes are among the most iconic in the Highlands. The mountains, lochs and valleys offer panoramic views that will stay with you for a long time to come.
