The Route of the Islands, from Fort William to Mallaig

The Route des Îles connects Fort William to the port of Mallaig. It runs alongside lochs, crosses mountains and reaches several wild beaches on the west coast.

The Glenfinnan Viaduct is the most famous stop. The road then passes the beaches of Morar and Arisaig, from where, on a clear day, you can see the islands of Rum and Eigg. Bealach na Bà, among the most spectacular scenic drives in Scotland

Bealach na Bà connects the coast to the Applecross peninsula. Its name means "cattle pass" in Gaelic. This mountain road is famous for its tight bends and steep gradients, making it one of the most spectacular in the country.

From the summit, the view extends to the neighboring islands. However, the road is not recommended for motorhomes, caravans, or drivers unaccustomed to narrow roads. In bad weather, it's best to avoid it altogether.

The Trotternish Loop on the Isle of Skye

North of Skye, the road that circles the Trotternish peninsula connects several major sites. It passes near the Old Man of Storr, Kilt Rock, and the Quiraing.

The North Coast 500, the great scenic drive of Scotland

The North Coast 500 forms a loop of approximately 830 kilometers around the north of Scotland, starting from Inverness. It runs alongside beaches, cliffs, lochs and isolated villages.

The Snow Roads Scenic Route

It crosses the Cairngorms between Blairgowrie and Grantown-on-Spey. It notably crosses one of the highest road passes in the United Kingdom, with vast mountain scenery.

The Argyll Coastal Route

It runs along the west coast between Loch Lomond and Fort William, passing through Inveraray and Oban. Lochs, castles and fishing villages follow one another all along the route.

The South West Coastal 300

In the southwest, this loop crosses Dumfries and Galloway. It offers a quieter Scotland, between coasts, forests and small towns.

Driving on Scotland's scenic roads

In Scotland, they drive on the left. Furthermore, many roads in the Highlands are single-track, with passing places for vehicles to cross. Here are the basic rules:

• Stop in the passing place on your left, or wait opposite the one on the right.
• Also, let faster vehicles overtake by pulling over.
• Never park in a passing place to take a picture.
• Finally, allow more time than indicated by the GPS.
