Loch Ness, the most famous of Scotland's most beautiful lochs

It’s impossible to talk about the Scotland’s most beautiful lochs not to mention Loch Ness. Situated to the south-west of Inverness, it runs through part of the Highlands for nearly 37 kilometres.

Of course, the loch is famous all over the world thanks to the legend of Nessie. However, it is also well worth a visit for its scenery and its mysterious atmosphere.

From the ruins of Urquhart Castle, the view of the water is particularly beautiful. In addition, several cruises offer views of the shores and mountains from the loch. All the surrounding sites are detailed in our guide. What to do around Loch Ness.

Loch Lomond, one of the most beautiful lochs in Scotland

Loch Lomond lies at the heart of the Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park. Easily accessible from Glasgow, it is often the first stop on a trip to the Highlands.

Its shores alternate between forests, beaches, villages and mountains. The loch is also home to numerous islands, which can be seen on a boat trip.

The village of Luss is also worth a stop. Its flower-adorned cottages and small jetty offer a typically Scottish setting. Luss is among the most beautiful Scottish villages.

Loch Katrine, in the heart of the Trossachs

Surrounded by wooded hills, Loch Katrine offers a peaceful atmosphere. It is notably associated with the story of Rob Roy MacGregor and the tales of Walter Scott.

Once there, you can set off on a boat trip or hire a bike. Afterwards, a quiet road takes you along part of the riverbank.

As such, Loch Katrine is ideal for travellers looking to combine the great outdoors with gentle activities.

Loch Shiel, between Glenfinnan and the wild countryside

Loch Shiel lies at the foot of the Glenfinnan Mountains. It is best known for the monument erected in memory of the Jacobite Rising of 1745.

From the viewpoint near the Glenfinnan Viaduct, the panorama is spectacular. The loch appears between the mountains, while the famous viaduct is revealed on the other side. This viaduct can also be explored by train, as in our... train routes in Scotland.

What’s more, some film scenes were shot in this region. The site therefore attracts lovers of scenery, history and cinema.

Loch Maree, among the most beautiful lochs in Northwest Scotland

Loch Maree is situated in a wilder part of the country, between Torridon and the north-west coast. Its waters are surrounded by mountains and Caledonian pines.

Several small islands dot the loch, adding to its unspoilt character. What’s more, the viewing points set up along the road offer lovely opportunities to stop off.

Loch Maree remains less crowded than Loch Ness. It will therefore appeal to travellers seeking peace and quiet and wide open spaces.

Loch Coruisk, at the foot of the Cuillin

On the Isle of Skye, Loch Coruisk lies hidden at the foot of the Cuillin mountains. Its rocky surroundings lend it an almost surreal atmosphere.

The easiest way to approach it is to take a boat from Elgol. This excursion is one of the must-sees on the Isle of Skye. Next, a short walk allows you to discover the riverbanks.

However, the weather can change quickly in this region. It is therefore best to pack waterproof clothing and sturdy footwear.

Loch Tay, where history meets the mountains

Loch Tay runs through Perthshire between Killin and Kenmore. It is surrounded by mountains, forests and small villages.

To the west, the Falls of Dochart flow through the village of Killin. To the east, Kenmore offers a beautiful view of the loch and access to the surrounding countryside.

Furthermore, the region still bears traces of ancient lakeside settlements. This stop therefore offers an opportunity to combine nature, history and local culture.

Loch Awe, one of the most beautiful lochs in Scotland, with its castle

Loch Awe is home to one of Scotland’s most photogenic settings. On its shores stand the ruins of Kilchurn Castle, surrounded by mountains.

The castle is particularly beautiful when the water is calm. Its walls are then reflected in the loch, creating a picture-postcard scene.

What’s more, this region lies on the route between Loch Lomond and Oban. It can therefore easily be included in a tour of the west coast.

Loch Morar, wild and deep

Loch Morar is situated near the village of Mallaig. Although far less well-known than Loch Ness, it nevertheless has its own legendary creature, nicknamed Morag.

The surrounding countryside is unspoilt and largely undeveloped. As such, the area is ideal for travellers wishing to get away from the main tourist routes.

Finally, the area offers easy access to the beaches at Morar and the harbour at Mallaig.

Loch an Eilein, in the Cairngorms National Park

In the heart of Rothiemurchus Forest, Loch an Eilein offers an accessible and pleasant walk. A footpath takes you all the way round the loch through the pine trees.

On a small island lie the ruins of an ancient castle. This detail adds even more to the charm of the landscape.

In autumn, the colors of the forest are reflected in the water. It is also the time to witness the deer rutting season in Scotland. The site then became one of the most beautiful places to walk in the Cairngorms.

How to choose among the most beautiful lochs in Scotland?

The choice depends mainly on your itinerary and what you’re looking for. Loch Ness is perfect for those who love legends and history. Loch Lomond, on the other hand, is ideal for a first visit near Glasgow.

For more rugged scenery, head for Loch Maree or Loch Coruisk. Loch Awe and Loch Shiel, meanwhile, will appeal to photography enthusiasts.

Finally, Loch Katrine and Loch an Eilein are ideal for an easy walk in a natural setting.
