Why Scotland for a romantic getaway?

Scotland truly offers what many couples are looking for: wide open spaces, a rich history, and genuine privacy. Outside of major cities, the population density remains very low. It's therefore not uncommon to enjoy a loch or a beach without encountering another soul.

The country also offers a wide variety of atmospheres within short distances. You can spend an evening in a cocktail bar in Edinburgh, then wake up to a view of the mountains the next day. Finally, the warm welcome of the Scots makes every step easier, especially for a romantic getaway away from the crowds.

Edinburgh, an ideal capital for a romantic getaway

Edinburgh is often the first stop. Its cobbled streets, hidden staircases, and dark stone facades create an almost theatrical atmosphere. UNESCO has even designated both the Old Town and the New Town as World Heritage Sites.

For a romantic moment, climb Calton Hill at the end of the day. The view encompasses the castle, the old town, and the Firth of Forth. The more adventurous can instead climb Arthur's Seat, an ancient volcano that overlooks the town.

The next day, stroll through Dean Village, a former millers' quarter on the banks of the Water of Leith. Finish with dinner in Stockbridge or Leith, two neighborhoods known for their lively atmosphere. Two or three nights are enough for a relaxed romantic getaway to Edinburgh.

Sleeping in a castle: the dream of a romantic getaway

It's impossible to talk about romance in Scotland without mentioning its castles. Many of them even welcome travelers: here's where sleep in a castle in Scotland. Several of them now house charming hotels. You sleep in four-poster rooms, surrounded by antique woodwork and garden views.

Near Edinburgh, Dalhousie Castle, for example, offers a night in a 13th-century fortress.e century. In the Highlands, Inverlochy Castle Hotel offers a view of the mountains around Fort William.

These addresses, however, remain high-end. For a more affordable romantic getaway, manor houses and country houses also offer plenty of charm. We advise you to book these stays several months in advance, especially in summer. To help you choose, also browse our selection of most beautiful castles in Scotland.

The Highlands and the Isle of Skye: landscapes to share

North of Glasgow, the Highlands reveal another side of Scotland. The Glencoe road, in particular, crosses one of the most spectacular valleys in the country. Further northwest, Eilean Donan Castle stands on an island, at the confluence of three lochs.

The Isle of Skye is then reached via a bridge. Its cliffs, waterfalls, and rocky plateaus create a cinematic setting. At sunset, the Neist Point lighthouse offers one of the most romantic panoramas on the island.

For a romantic getaway, however, we recommend staying two nights, as the narrow roads take time to navigate. Our guide Highlands or Isle of Skye helps you choose if time is short.

Romantic experiences to enjoy as a couple

Beyond its stunning landscapes, Scotland offers numerous experiences for couples. A tasting at a whisky distillery, for example, allows you to discover centuries-old craftsmanship. An afternoon tea in an elegant Edinburgh tea room also provides a refined and indulgent break.

A loch cruise or a boat trip to watch the seals is also popular with couples. And in the evening, nothing beats a seafood meal in a village pub, by the fire.

In winter, the north of the country sometimes offers a chance to see the Northern Lights, depending on the weather and solar activity. Don't promise them to your partner: consider them a gift from heaven.

When is the best time to go on a romantic trip to Scotland?

Each season offers a different atmosphere. From May to June, the days are very long and nature is in bloom. September then brings warm colors and slightly fewer crowds.

Winter, on the other hand, appeals to couples who enjoy cozy atmospheres: cottages with fireplaces, whisky, and invigorating walks. At the end of December, the Hogmanay celebrations in Edinburgh also attract visitors from all over the world.

Beware of midges, tiny flies that are especially prevalent on the west coast during the summer. A suitable repellent is usually enough to protect your romantic getaway. Our guide when to go to Scotland details the situation month by month.

Honeymoon, anniversary or marriage proposal

Scotland is a popular honeymoon destination. We detail trip durations and itineraries in our guide to... honeymoon in Scotland. Many couples also choose the country to celebrate an anniversary or plan a marriage proposal. A viewpoint from a hilltop or the ruins of a castle then offer an unforgettable setting.

Some even go further and get married there. We also accompany the...’wedding planning in Scotland, from the ceremony venue to the honeymoon.

Our tips for a successful getaway for two

Slow down the pace first. Two nights at each stop allows you to enjoy the places rather than repacking your suitcases every morning. Then, leave some free time, without a plan, for an impromptu walk or a long evening at the pub.

For getting around, a car remains the most flexible option outside of cities. Consider an automatic transmission, as driving is on the left. Our article for rent a car in Scotland gathers all the useful advice.

Finally, pack warm and waterproof clothing, even in summer. The weather changes quickly, but stormy skies often make the landscapes even more beautiful.
