◷ 7-minute read

A trip to Scotland for seniors Planning a trip is different from a typical road trip for young hikers. A good pace, comfortable hotels, and a willingness to drive on the left often matter more than the number of stops. Based in the UK since 2012, we design trips tailored to every pace. Here are our practical tips, customized itineraries, and their actual prices.

In short: For a trip to Scotland, seniors particularly appreciate an escorted tour, either private or in a small group, where driving is not on the left. Allow 6 to 8 days with two nights per stop. The most pleasant months are May, June, and September. Our tours start at €1,000 per person for 4 days in Edinburgh, and around €1,500 to €1,850 for 6 to 8 days, excluding flights. A valid passport and an ETA (Electronic Travel Authorization) costing £20 are required.

The best part of a road trip?

Most importantly, most of the major sites can be visited without significant physical effort. Scotland’s most beautiful lochs They can be discovered from the road or by boat. Scottish castles and whisky distilleries They, for their part, offer guided walking tours on short routes.

Which option should I choose for a senior citizen's trip to Scotland?

There's no single profile for senior travelers. Some couples are happy to drive, while others prefer to be guided. Here are the three options we most often offer to seniors.

Guided tours, private or small group

This is the most popular option among our senior travelers. A guide takes you from one stop to the next, and you don't have to drive on the left, sometimes on narrow roads. This allows you to fully enjoy the scenery. In a small group, the atmosphere remains friendly, without the crowds of large coaches.

The train journey

The train connects Edinburgh, Glasgow, Inverness, and the Highlands via spectacular routes. It eliminates the need for driving and offers considerable comfort. Our train trip to Scotland departing from Paris lasts 7 days. To learn more, consult our guide to Most beautiful train routes in Scotland.

The leisurely self-drive tour

Do you enjoy driving and staying free? A self-drive tour is still possible, provided you shorten your daily stages. We recommend driving less than 150 km per day and staying two nights in the same place. Also, choose a car with an automatic transmission; driving on the left is much more relaxing. Our tips for rent a car in Scotland will help you make the right choice.

Our tours in Scotland adapted for seniors

Here are the trips we most often recommend to seniors. Prices are per person, starting from, and exclude flights unless otherwise stated. Each program can be slowed down or shortened upon request.

How many days and what pace should I plan for?

For a first trip, 6 to 8 days are enough to discover Edinburgh and part of the Highlands. Beyond that, it's better to add more nights in each location rather than new stops. Changing hotels every night can quickly become tiring.

  • Two nights minimum per stage, so you only have to unpack once.
  • Three to four hours of driving maximum per day, including breaks.
  • A half-day off from time to time, to rest or stroll.
  • Hotels with elevator or ground floor rooms are available upon request.

If you're hesitating between two regions, our comparison tool will help. Highlands or Isle of Skye will help you choose.

When is the best time to go to Scotland for seniors?

May, June, and September are the months we most recommend for seniors. The days are long, the weather remains quite mild, and the sites are less crowded than in July and August. Furthermore, hotels are often more affordable than in the height of summer.

Winter has its charm too, especially in Edinburgh during the holidays. However, the days are very short in the Highlands, and some attractions close. Our guide when to go to Scotland details each season.

Our practical tips for a stress-free trip to Scotland

Formalities and health

Since Brexit, an identity card is no longer sufficient. A valid passport and a electronic travel authorization (ETA), to be requested before departure. Also bring your European Health Insurance Card, which remains accepted in the UK, and take out travel insurance. Finally, keep your medication in your hand luggage, along with your prescription. Full details are in our guide to formalities for the United Kingdom.

Discounts for seniors

Many castles and museums offer reduced rates for seniors, often from the age of 60 or 65. This is particularly true of many sites managed by Historic Environment Scotland, like Edinburgh and Stirling castles. So remember to show ID at the ticket office. Also, Edinburgh's national museums are free for everyone.

Mobility and comfort

Edinburgh is a hilly city, with cobblestones and many stairs. Pack comfortable shoes and, if necessary, a hotel near the city center to minimize walking. In the Highlands, most viewpoints are accessible by car. Simply let us know your requirements, and we'll tailor your hotels, tours, and transfers.
