The main budget items for a trip to Scotland

Accommodation

It's often the biggest expense. Edinburgh is the most expensive city, especially in August during the festivals. Since July 24, 2026, the city has also applied a tourist tax of 5 % on overnight stays, capped at five consecutive nights.

Transportation

A rental car remains the most flexible option for exploring the Highlands and Islands. Also consider fuel costs, which are often higher in remote areas, and ferries to the islands. Our guide to rent a car in Scotland details the points to check.

The train, meanwhile, is well-suited for journeys between cities and on certain scenic routes. The famous Jacobite steam train, for example, costs £76 for a return adult ticket in standard class in 2026.

The visits

Many natural sites are free, such as Glencoe, the beaches, and most hiking trails. However, major monuments do require an entrance fee. Edinburgh Castle, for example, costs £21.50 per adult when booked online, according to its website. official website.

Meals

A simple lunch in a pub or café is reasonable. In the evening, however, restaurants in towns and tourist areas are more expensive. Furthermore, restaurants are scarce in the Highlands: book your table in advance during the summer.

The formalities

• Go in May, June or September: prices are lower than in July and August, and the days are still long.
• Avoid Edinburgh in August if you are not coming for the festivals.
• Book accommodation, car and ferries several months in advance.
